Also like how all the colors except the red feel like the same value. I know that's not literally true (how could that brown not be deeper?), but in this photo, anyway, feels that way.
Also, sorry to have to bring this dull thing up again: scale! Scale is really good here.

sorry about that it must be in the settings somewhere and thanks for your thoughts. it's funny you mention scale because yesterday i was in minneapolis admring this http://www.artsmia.org/viewer/detail.php?v=12&id=1521 particularly for its scale to form or form to scale relations - it feels urgently off, much more so than the grand late painting that is currently hanging next to it. vic

Taken with the incised marks on the unpainted(?) part which I think extend under the painted parts too? That texture against the less texture is good.
